Why Is My Skincare Routine No Longer Working? 25 Reasons and What to Do

October 05, 2026•7 min read

Why Is My Skincare Routine No Longer Working?

It is a question I hear quite often. And before you rush off to buy something new, book a treatment or completely change your skincare routine, it is worth taking a step back and looking at what has actually changed.

You haven’t necessarily done anything wrong.

You may still be using the same cleanser, moisturiser and serum you’ve used for years, but suddenly your skin feels different.Perhaps it feels drier. Or more sensitive. Maybe you’re experiencing breakouts, your complexion looks duller, or the products you have always relied on just don’t seem to be making the same difference.

So naturally, you think:

“My skincare has stopped working.”

Sometimes that may be the case.

But quite often, the products haven’t changed.

Your skin has.

And that’s something we can easily overlook.

Your skin doesn’t stay the same forever

Our skin changes throughout our lives.

Age, hormones, stress, sleep, weather, lifestyle and sun exposure can all affect how our skin looks and feels.

You might find that a product you’ve used happily for years suddenly feels too rich, too light or even irritating. Or perhaps your skin has become drier, more sensitive or more prone to congestion.

This can be particularly noticeable during periods of hormonal change, including perimenopause and menopause.

That doesn’t mean your skin is suddenly “bad”.

It simply means that what worked for your skin a few years ago may not necessarily be what it needs now.

Are you treating the skin you have, or the skin you used to have?

This is something I encourage clients to think about.

It is very easy to say:

“I’ve always used this.”

And if something has worked for years, why would you change it?

But if your skin has changed, it is worth reassessing rather than automatically carrying on with the same routine.

Ask yourself:

  • Does my skin feel drier than it used to?

  • Has it become more sensitive?

  • Am I noticing more pigmentation?

  • Has my skin become more congested?

  • Does my moisturiser still feel comfortable throughout the day?

  • Am I noticing changes in firmness or fine lines?

  • Are products that were once comfortable now causing irritation?

Your answers can tell you much more than the latest skincare trend.

Sometimes, you’re simply using too much

More products don’t necessarily mean better skin.

It is very easy to gradually build up a collection of cleansers, exfoliators, serums, masks and treatments.

You might start with one product because your skin feels dull. Then you add another because you’ve noticed pigmentation. Then someone recommends an exfoliant or a new serum.

Before long, your skin is being asked to cope with a lot.

If you’re experiencing dryness, redness, tightness, stinging or increased sensitivity, it may be worth simplifying your routine rather than adding another product.

Sometimes,less really is more.

You may be treating the wrong problem

This is another common mistake.

Perhaps your skin looks dull, so you assume you need to exfoliate more.

But perhaps your skin is actually dehydrated.

You exfoliate again.

Your skin becomes drier.

Your fine lines become more noticeable.

So you exfoliate again.

You can see how easily you can end up going around in circles.

Instead of asking:

“What product should I buy?”

Try asking:

“What has actually changed about my skin?”

There is a big difference.

Your skin barrier may need some attention

If your skin suddenly feels tight, uncomfortable or sensitive, it may be telling you that it needs a gentler approach.

Think about whether you’ve recently increased exfoliation, introduced several new products or started using stronger active ingredients.

If you have, stripping everything back can sometimes be more helpful than adding another treatment.

A simple routine that your skin tolerates well is a much better starting point than a complicated routine that leaves your face feeling uncomfortable.

Don’t forget the things outside your bathroom cabinet

Skincare is only one part of the picture.

Have you been sleeping badly?

Are you under more stress than usual?

Has the weather changed?

Have you been spending more time in the sun?

Have you recently gone through a period of hormonal change?

Sometimes we focus so much on finding the right product that we forget to look at what else has changed in our lives.

Your skin can reflect those changes too.

So, what should you do?

Before throwing away your entire skincare collection, stop and reassess.

Start by writing down everything you currently use, including products you only use occasionally.

Then think about your main concern.

Is it:

Dryness?

Sensitivity?

Congestion?

Pigmentation?

Dullness?

Fine lines?

Loss of firmness?

Try to choose the one thing that bothers you most.

Then look at whether your current routine is actually addressing that concern.

And don’t change everything at once.

If you introduce five new products together, you won’t know which one has helped, or which one has caused a reaction.

Make changes gradually and give your skin time to respond.

When is it worth getting professional advice?

If you’ve tried changing your routine and still feel confused about what your skin needs, this is where professional advice can be helpful.

You don’t need to arrive knowing which facial or treatment you want.

In fact, you don’t need to know what treatment you need at all.

A good consultation should be about understanding your skin, listening to your concerns and helping you work out what is appropriate for you.

Sometimes the answer may be a change to your homecare.

Sometimes professional treatment may be worth considering.

And sometimes the best advice may simply be to stop using so many products and give your skin a chance to settle.

There isn’t one answer that is right for everyone.

At Relaxation Centre Sandhurst

We believe your skin should be looked at as an individual rather than simply choosing a treatment because it is popular or because somebody else has had good results from it.

Your skin, your concerns and your lifestyle are all different.

If you’re unsure where to start, that’s okay.

You can talk to us about what has changed, what you’ve already tried and what you’d like to improve. From there, we can help you understand your options rather than expecting you to arrive knowing exactly what you need.

And sometimes, the most useful advice is not about buying another product at all.

Your skin changes. Your skincare can change with it.

If your skincare routine used to work and suddenly doesn’t, don’t panic and don’t feel that you have to replace everything.

Take a step back.

Look at what has changed.

Simplify where necessary.

And if you’re still unsure, ask for professional advice.

Good skincare isn’t about having the most products. It’s about understanding what your skin needs now.

Not Sure What Your Skin Needs?

If your skincare routine no longer seems to be working, you don’t have to work it all out on your own.

If you’re unsure what has changed or where to start, we’re happy to talk through your concerns and help you understand your options.

You don’t need to arrive knowing which treatment you need. That’s what professional advice is for.
